Urs Wellhoener is the Technical Director Brewing R&D for the Boston Beer Company. He started with this company in October 2007 as the Manager for Yeast and Fermentation. In current role the focus lies in finding and applying innovative ideas related to brewing in general (raw materials, brewhouse, fermentation, filtration) and special fermentations to improve quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

After his graduation he was the project manager on a fermentation project at Veltins Brewery, Meschede-Grevenstein/GER (1999-2000). In October 2000 Wellhoener joined the Chair of Brewing Technology II at the Weihenstephan Center of Food and Life Sciences, Technische Universität München-Weihenstephan (TUM), as scientific assistant, lecturer and doctorate until 2007. In 2005 Wellhoener received his Ph.D. degree for his studies on yeast physiology during fermentation and propagation. During his time in Weihenstephan he also worked for Muellerbraeu, Pfaffenhofen/GER, as their QC manager.
Urs Wellhoener is also a member of various groups and organizations:
